What is Bone China?

Bone china is the finest and most translucent of all ceramic bodies. Developed in England in the late 18th century, it contains a minimum of 30% bone ash — derived from animal bone — combined with china clay and china stone. This unique composition gives bone china its characteristic warmth of color, delicate translucency, and remarkable strength.

Aynsley uses a minimum of 50% bone ash in our formulations, exceeding industry standards and ensuring the exceptional quality that has defined our brand for over 250 years.

Translucency

Hold a piece to the light and witness the warm, luminous glow that only fine bone china can produce.

Strength

Despite its delicate appearance, bone china is remarkably strong and chip-resistant, built to last generations.

Warmth

The natural bone ash content gives our china a distinctive warm ivory tone, unlike any other ceramic material.

Molding

Clay is shaped using molds with the help of modern equipment and skilled artisans.

Smoothing

Surfaces are gently refined with sponges to create a smoother bone china body.

Glazing & Firing

After the first bisque firing, glaze is applied and the piece is fired again to form the white bone china body.

Decoration Techniques

Patterns are hand-painted or precisely transferred onto the porcelain before final firing.

Relief & Gilding

Complex decorations are handcrafted, including delicate liquid gold detailing.

Quality Control

Every piece is carefully selected; only refined products are released.
